The first part of being a strong submissive woman is the strong part! In order for us to be the balanced, hard-working, submissive, and best women we can be, we need to take care of ourselves first. In order to be the women God has called us to be, we need to make sure that we stay in good health. Our health affects every aspect of our lives from how we feel going through the day to how much energy we have to play with the children to what kind of mood we are in when our husbands get home to how much we contribute to society.
God instructs us time and time again in his word to take care of our bodies. 1 Cor 6:15 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?” Then he says in 1 Cor 6:19-20, “19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” Again in 1 Cor 12:27, “27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” Those are just a few of many examples. Yet, we often ignore this and don’t follow those commands. We feel like if we did that if we put ourselves and our health as a top priority we would be neglecting other priorities. It seems we feel as if it would be selfish of us take care of ourselves. But that’s not the case. Just like all of God’s other commands, this is one we should take very seriously.
We need to nourish our bodies with good food. We need to eat food that brings life and not death. Often when we eat we think, “I’m going to eat what is good” or, “this is delicious. I’ll have some more”. But the purpose of food is not for enjoyment. The purpose of food is to nourish our bodies and keep them healthy and strong. We live in a society and age where foods are often processed, modified, prepackaged, quick, and easy. Our ancestors they would have to go and plow their crops hunting for their meat keep chickens for their eggs but we can just go to the Walmart and pick up some freezer meals and pop them in the microwave. No wonder our health isn’t good! These meals are terrible for you! There is so much processed food with all these additives and preservatives, even our vegetables and fruits have been genetically modified! Why do we eat this? Why do we think this is good for our bodies? There is a movement lately back to a more primitive way of eating, known as the Paleo diet. I really would love to be able to stick to this diet! But after years of fast food and freezer food, it is good to be tough! We need to focus on the purpose of food as it’s supposed to be to nourish our bodies and to keep us healthy.
What about fitness? When’s the last time you actually exercised? I know, I know, it’s hard to have time for it. We are all so busy! We have work, the kids have practice after school, we’ve got a project to work on at home, etc. That’s why exercise is often neglected. But it is so essential to keeping our bodies strong and healthy. I know myself for one, over the last year, exercise has been pretty much non-existent for me, and it shows. Not just in how I look, but in the way I feel. I don’t have energy, I have aches and pains I didn’t used to have, I just don’t quite feel like myself. But all that can change. God has given me the ability and power to make that change. It is amazing with the human body can do! Despite all the abuse we put our bodies through; if we work hard it can bounce back and can be healthy again. And that’s when I am to do.
The first part of being a strong submissive woman is the strong part. In order for us to be the balanced, hard-working, submissive women God created us to be, we have to take care of ourselves first. In order to be the women God has called us to be we need to make sure that we staying in good health. Our health affects every aspect of our life. How we feel going through the day, how much energy we have to play with our children, what kind of mood we’re in when our husband gets home, or how much we contribute to society; it all depends a lot on our health. Find time for exercise. While the kids are at practice, walk around the field a few times. Schedule in 30 minutes to take a walk or go to the gym. That little bit of time can make a big difference. We make time for what is important us and we need to make our health a priority. But we have to make the time and the effort. And if we’re not doing so, we’re not following God’s commands. He calls us to take care of ourselves and it’s time we do that. It’s time that we stop making excuses and start doing what needs to be done. By being healthy and being strong we can ensure we have the energy, stamina, and ability to fulfill the demands of our busy daily life. We try to have a balance between work, the kids’ activities, our church family, and home life but in order to do that, we need that balance in our own health as well. I know we have many focuses in our lives but this needs to be one of our main ones. What can you do today to start changing this aspect of your life? What can you do today to make your help establish a new level of fitness? Don’t put it off another day, because the more you put it all the fewer days you may have to do it.
